Bleak

I should have written something here yesterday, because it was Wednesday.  Instead, I made a lemon cake and started reading a new novel.  It is bleak mid-winter now, and yesterday was just that kind of day.

Let me tell you about this book I am reading:  it's scary.  I mean, it's got me completely spooked for a lot of reasons:  fairies, the shadow man, dust motes, ghosts, old house ruins, barred owls, a skeleton key, a pocket full of molars, a shiny orange pebble, shadow monsters, the blurred question of reality, the woods....and I'm not even half-way through the book.  If you knew me, you would understand why this list is so unnerving.  It's as if this author has a psychic connection with me or something.

This house is too small for all of the people who live in it.  I have to go to the grocery store everyday, because the kitchen isn't big enough to keep a week's worth of groceries in it.  Now that's just an observation, not a complaint.  A complaint would be to say that I hate it.

I saw a picture on pinterest or tumblr or we <3 it or somewhere, that showed a poster that said something like, "Life is too short to be unhappy, so if you hate your job find a different one, if you hate your hair color dye it, if you don't like your house move...etc.  It made me really mad.  Do they have any idea how much hair color costs?

  1. Bleak mid-winter. If only I could fully express how much I love that phrase. Almost as much as I love lemon cake.

That book does sound scary. Several things in the list freaked me out, yes just the mention of them. I'm still shivering, thinking of them. I'd read the book except that I don't really like being scared.

I recently read that it's healthier and cheaper to go shopping more often. I can see how they figured that out, but there you go.

That quote makes me annoyed too, and I laughed out loud at your response :-) (No, I didn't lol. I am an old-fashioned girl; I use whole words.)

(Okay, not actually true. Infact, when I see something funny, I often say "lol" to myself!)

Pinterest et al are pretty much idiotic. Sure, find a new job in this economic climate. Sure, move house (maybe they'd like to come help me do that?) Sure, poison yourself with hair dye, then you'll at least shorten your unhappy life. Who says life has to be happy, anyway?

    :-)

    1. "Bleak mid-winter"--I love that phrase, too. Do you know where it's from? Christina Rosetti's famous Christmas poem. I like the first stanza best.

I have finished the book, and I have to say that I loved it. It was chilling, creepy, horrifying, and one of the best stories I have ever read.

Who says life has to be happy? Television, billboards, magazines, the internet, books, etc. Without them, who knows? We might actually have a chance at being happy. Have you ever read, The Continuum Concept? It's an anthropological book about a tribe in South America that was untouched by the modern world, and supposedly, the tribe was outstandingly happy. The principles of attachment parenting came from that book/study.

  2. You make me laugh about hair color. I don't know how much it costs, but I do think that it is good to change what you can. But, clearly this person must have, I don't know, written it before this depression or never lived in a place like I do. We've never had our pick of jobs, we've always made do. That will probably be the story of our lives, and many others.

That said, I am closer to seeing my dream of a Waldorf school come true, something I never even thought to hope for. Life is for more grey and complex than blanket statements about making your own joy or working hard and having it work out.

    1. Grey--yup, that' my color :-)

Brandy, I am so excited about all of the good things that are happening in your life. I know that these "dreams" are the culmination of a lot of hard work on your part. I hope the Waldorf school becomes a reality for your children.

    1. It's pretty scary, but such a good story--lots of twists and turns; completely unpredictable.

    1. I finished the book this weekend, and I loved it. It's really chilling, but such a good story with an incredibly twisty plot. I hope your library has it.
