Billow

The yarn I ordered from Knitpicks arrived on Saturday. I casted-on for Rosa's Caponcho last night. "Billow" is a 100% cotton yarn that truly is scrumptiously soft. I love how it feels. I seriously doubt that there is another cotton yarn out there that can compete with this yarn's sheen, softness, drape, and loft. It is an 8 ply that boasts a rustic thick and thin quality, but I have to tell you that the variation between thick and thin is extreme. The yarn goes from fine fingering weight to bulky in quite short intervals, and I'm not sure if I am going to like the look of the knitted fabric it produces. I'll let you know.

I started reading M.L. Stedman's The Light Between Oceans. I've heard that although the book is beautifully written, it is a sad story. I don't like sad stories. But, it's the first selection in a new book club I've joined, so I'm committed to reading it. I hope it doesn't get me down. You know how books can do that to me. It took me months to recover from The Girl With Glass Feet--and then there was The Blind Contessa's New MachineBoth books were excellent in every way, but really sad.

I have to show you this:  The other day I was walking at the pond and saw these pretty yellow wildflowers growing around the base of a large tree. I moved quite close to snap the picture but never saw the extra subject  until I got home and uploaded it (I think he saw me though!). What a nice surprise.

Thank you, Ginny, for hosting your weekly Yarn Along.

Happy Wednesday, everybody!

  1. I've had some yarn like that. Chipmunks are hard to photograph! We have some around here and they move fast. Once, I looked in the gutter drain and saw two little eyes looking up at me. That would have been a great picture. It's a great memory instead. Good to hear from you!

    1. I should add, what I made with the variable yarn turned out just fine. It all evened out in the end. :-)

    2. Hi Brandy, that's good to know about the yarn. I knit some more last night, and I am liking the fabric it makes more and more.

  2. You couldn't have planned that chipmunk if you tried! I am not a fan of thick/thin wool for just the reason. I say knit up a bit, tuck it away for a day or two and then pull it out and go with the gut reaction. It's a pretty yarn!!

    1. That's good advice, Karen. I knit a bit last night, and I am liking the results more and more. This yarn is soft and drapey and lovely. Even though the fabric has an uneven "rustic" look, I think it works because it's cotton. If it were wool, I think the thick-thin quality would be a disaster.

  3. The Light Between Oceans is beautifully written but troubled my heart. I liked the ending though, it was all that came before the ending which was so sad. (However, I would vote its title one of the best ever.) The Girl With Glass Feet was - oh, so gorgeous - a poem - a wonder. But such a sad book too. I still haven't quite recovered from reading it, years later!

    I love the chipmunk :-)

    1. I don't want heart trouble! If the story gets to be too much for me, I'll have to skip it and miss the first meeting of the group...although that's probably unfair of me. But, hey, I've gotta protect my tender heart. : )

  4. I've been meaning to try Billow since it was released! I didn't realize it was so thick and thin, but I definitely see it in your picture. Would you recommend it for a baby blanket?

    1. I think Billow would make a wonderfully soft, cozy baby blanket. On size eleven needles the finished fabric is "loose" and drapey. I will post a picture tomorrow so you can see what it looks like knitted-up. : )

  6. I see you are liking the way your new yarn knits up. Interesting thoughts about wool vs. cotton and even vs. uneven. I knit a wool blend that had extreme thicks and thins last year and didn't care for it at all. I'll have to re-open my mind and try a cotton (I think the pattern has a lot to do with it, too; you picked a good one.)
Isn't it fun to find surprises when you upload pictures? Chippie is so cute!

  7. You are so cute! I know what it's like to be totally into the picture and not see what's right in front of the lens. :) Definitely the thick, thin yarn sounds like my cup of tea. Do let us know. I too stay away from sad books... at all cost! Book club huh? How committed are you? ;)

    Blessings, Debbie
