I just got back from another weekend trip back to my hometown. We had a great time visiting family and friends, and I got to show my daughters some of the prettiest countryside on the planet. How wonderful it would be to own a house there.
Hollyhocks are taking over my garden. When I was a little girl I used to make dolls out of them by poking a little hole into the bottom of a blossom with a stick, and then attaching a bud for a head like this:
So, now you know how absolutely, outrageously insane I am. : )
I should be done knitting my Rosa'a Caponcho (I only have a few more rounds to go), but it's summer and the woods and water beckon me. In the evenings I'm too tired to knit. : ) I had some errands to run this morning and stopped by the library to pick up something to read: Alice Hoffman's, The Ice Queen. I can't wait to get started. Last night, when we got home from our little trip, we had "Under The Dome" waiting for us on DVR. I really liked it. Spooky! Did any of you watch the first episode?
I am conducting a little Reading Preference Survey. So far I have nine responses. I would love to have at least twenty. Would you consider helping me out? You can leave your responses in the comments to this post. (The survey questions appear in the first comment). I will be posting the results of the survey Friday evening. Thank you so much!
Have a great day!

DeleteSweet little hollyhock dolls! Makes me think I need to plant some in my garden. :-)
ReplyDeleteNext year I'm going to plant more in different colors. I really love them.
DeleteI had hollyhocks for years, but never thought to make dolls out of them! (I can't decide which gown I prefer, hmmm) :D
ReplyDeleteI used to make people out of sticks and pebbles and leaves, too. : )
DeleteYour little video gave me a good chuckle. Our hollyhocks have started to bloom. I'll have to do this with Willow some nap time. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad my video made you smile--then it worked! What color hollyhocks do you have? Next year I'm going to plant lots more. My garden center sells young plants in their second year so they bloom right away. : )
DeleteMine are pale yellow and cream. You'll have to take a look at the dolls we made. :-) Toothpicks worked well for holding them together. Ours just drifted over from a neighboring yard.
Deletelove what hoffman writes. It's poetic and lyrical :) Love your doll idea, that is imagination at work. We do not have hollyhocks here :(
ReplyDeleteKaren, I just finished the book. It's about a woman who makes a wish and changes everything . . . she gets struck by lightning . . . it's about chaos theory and fairy tales. So many scientific facts entwined in Hoffman's magical realism. It's breathtaking.
