Yarning Along

I love getting happy things in the mail:  a letter or postcard from a friend, new yarn. This week a ball of Cascade 220 Superwash arrived. The color is pumpkin spice. It's going to become Devin Joesting's Optimistic Mitts, (free pattern!), which I first saw on Karen's blog. I've been watching lots of old movies in the evening, and I adore this pattern's vintage-y style

I've got another Caponcho on the needles. I'm doing this one in Reynold's Cabana, a bulky weight cotton/acrylic blend. The color is a woodsy green that I just love (the color is a little warmer than the photo shows). I'm thinking of adding some pumpkin spice stripes ala Lori's version of the pattern to coordinate it with the mitts.

This week I'm reading The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley. The main characters are psychic time travelers, and it is one of those stories that bounces back and forth between contemporary and historical story lines. Kearsley is a good historian, and it's obvious where her heart lies. The historical parts are exciting and vibrant, whereas the contemporary chapters seem to exist only to provide a vehicle to take us back in time. I really like the two main (contemporary) characters and hope that the focus of the story shifts to them in a more meaningful way as the novel progresses. (I'm just over halfway through.) It's the kind of book I love best--a story about love and mystery and encountering the fantastic. : )  I can definitely see Mary Stewart's influence in Kearsley's writing.

Have a great day!

  6. Ah, Mary Stewart - a woman came in the library yesterday to pick up a few Mary Stewarts; she's rediscovering her. They're just as good now as they were years ago. The yarn is beautiful!

  7. I just started this book and hope it will be as good as the two previous ones it references. I love the Scottish local and find myself traveling there. I'm a begining knitter, I've spend most of my time quilting but look forward to learn more about the knitting community. Just found your blog and look forward to returning. PattiO

    1. Patti, I am so happy that you left a comment. I think you will find the online knitting community to be kind and helpful. Have you joined Ravelry? It is a wonderful way to connect with other knitters, find patterns and resources, get help, learn new tips and tricks, and record your knitting projects. On Ravelry I'm Home Hum. : )

I would love to travel to Scotland one day. Have you read the Flight of Gemma Hardy? It is a modern re-telling of Jane Eyre and set in Scotland. I loved it.
