In the north, winter is long and snowy. And, really, that's just the way I like it. Snow has been falling since early this morning; there is about a foot of it now. I am keeping the bird feeders filled, baking cookies, and enjoying a quiet day knitting, reading, and writing.

In between knitting the clues for the Follow Your Arrow mystery shawl, I have started a pair of socks. The pattern is a free Ravelry download: Hermione's Everyday Socks. I really like the easy to knit texture of these socks.

Kate's Fantastic Gingersnaps
3/4 cup butter, softened                          2 teaspoons baking soda
1 cup sugar                                       2 cups flour
1 egg                                             1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup molasses                                  1 teaspoon ginger
                                                  1 teaspoon ground cloves
Preheat oven to 350°F

Cream together butter and sugar. Beat in the egg. Stir in the molasses. In a separate bowl, combine baking soda, flour, and spices. Combine dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Roll small balls of the dough in granulated sugar. Place them on a greased cookie sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes.

This is the best ginger cookie recipe I've ever tasted.

  1. What a delicious recipe. I have a ginger snap recipe that requires the ingredients to be refrigerated over night, but they do give you the most snappiest ginger snaps! What a lovely picture of a handsome cardinal! :) m.

  4. What a pretty design! And the color makes me think of St. Patrick. :) I suppose you got more snow than we did, but we got plenty!

  5. Perfect snowy day activities. I've given up hope of any snow this year now it's much to mild and damp. Thank you for directing us to the free sock pattern....I've just downloaded it. You are such a neat knitter. I could never make such a lovely sample. Thank you for sharing the ginger biscuit recipe. I love anything with ginger and am always looking for good biscuit recipes.
Enjoy lots more happy, homely snow days.

  6. love your mug :) The socks are really knitting up nicely and I might add in a most delightful cheery colorway. Oh that snow yesterday was fun! We went for a walk in the sleet (yes sleet) and it was nice to be out and about before it's too cold once again. I love when you share bird photos, I cannot feed birds due to pesky bears that love to walk through my property-I want them to continue on, not stop and eat :)

  7. Winter is long in the Midwest too, which makes this snow-loving girl joyful for the extended season. Great bird pictures: what a handsome cardinal, looking right at you, and the junco is making the most of shelter. You've reminded me to fill my bird feeders again; I've left them empty for a long stretch and I miss the daily appearances by my feathered-friends who are bred to face the cold winter temps.
