On my daily explores, I love to come across old stone fences hidden deep in the woods. I have read that there are over 250,000 miles of them throughout New England. The stones are not small; it took a lot of muscle to move them and fit them together into long, thick walls. After 250 years many of them are still standing.
The lovely wood anemone is in bloom. I've been looking for bluets but haven't seen any this spring. They are so tiny and sweet--fairy flowers. They are also known as "Quaker Ladies". I wonder why? Amy thinks she may have found some off the trail today; she's promised to show me tomorrow. Every day on my walk I see a new spring migrant: on Monday it was a blue headed vireo (formerly referred to as a solitary vireo) and today a blue-winged warbler. Walking through the woods after morning lessons is my favorite part of the day. Although really, I love every part of the day best, just as I love every season best, and every one of my children best.
On the knitting front, I have finally finished the body of my Shift of Focus cardi. It's a little big on me. Before I cast on for sleeves, I'm going to wet block it. If it turns out that the size just isn't going to work, I'll unravel it and re-knit it in a smaller size. This isn't as frustrating for me as you would think. I am a slow knitter, a process knitter, I guess, and I would rather knit it again than end up with something I won't wear. Plus, I simply can't afford to waste good wool. I do love the construction of this sweater. The pattern is simple and would be a good choice for a beginner. Those are pennies in the above photo showing where the buttons will be. I saw some pretty wooden buttons at the fabric store a few weeks ago with an interesting squarish shape that I think will be perfect. I hope they are still in stock.
Bluets? I love them, too. I can see them out the kitchen window, across the brook - I will try to take a picture for you.
ReplyDeleteButtons in a coppery color - or wood - would look very nice on your sweater.
Thanks for taking me on your explore! I love a walk in the woods, and the wood anemone is so sweet. We have bluets here. They are in abundance this year too. I've not heard of them being called "Quaker Ladies", maybe because they are so discreet? I really like your Shift of Focus cardi. I'm going to do a search to see what the final cardi looks like ~ can't wait. I would unravel it too if it didn't fit. Really...why go to all that work and then not wear it because it doesn't fit?! And, good yarn, isn't cheap! I like the color too. You do very nice work.
ReplyDeleteI will admit to being a wee bit envious of you stones, I love them, but unfortunately we are stone less here in the deep south.
ReplyDeleteYour Focus Cardi looks so pretty. I completely understand unraveling it if it's too big. What's the use in have something you'll never wear because it's not the right size?
Happy Wednesday.
oh I have my fingers crossed that it fits! lovely and I adore that pattern. I don't mind undoing knitting either. I think it comes with age :)
ReplyDeleteI pray it fits Susan...it looks so lovely :) Stones? here in PA, we have them by the bucketful :) mari
ReplyDeleteBeautiful anemones! I think we are going to the woods today. Just seems necessary, as it is going to be 86°. I hope your sweater fits--it is pretty. If not, I'm sure you'll find something just as lovely to make with the yarn.
ReplyDeleteI have that pattern marked on my ravelry too; I'm interested to see how the blocking works. I'm with you, I'd rather rip and re-knit -- I just learned that one the hard way! This weekend the trillium will be peaking here. Woodland flowers are so beautiful. I hope you find some bluets soon.
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day, Susan! Hope you have a nice day!
ReplyDeleteOh I hope that the blocking works! I had to unravel DH's sweater that I was knitting last year, but the extra work was worth the end result.
ReplyDeleteThe woods are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI had the same problem with my shift of focus cardigan. It came much too big for me as well. I unravelled it and made an alternative but if I ever decide to make it again like you I would choose a much smaller size. I think the yarn that I used was a little too heavy too.
I love your yarn choice. Happy knitting,
