A window above the kitchen sink seems intuitive, but I've toured enough historic homes in New England to know that it wasn't always commonplace. Many sinks faced a wall. Was it a woman's request, "I want a window above the sink", or the deed of a very thoughtful man that started the trend? I like working at my kitchen sink. The window is a kind of altar where I bring my work and God brings His view. It is a good place to think and pray, to feel the sunlight and watch the rain and chickens. Right now, my three red hens are molting.
The last couple of days have been cold, gray, and rainy, and I have kept my hands warm and busy with wool. Currently in my knitting basket: socks, hats, and a few Christmas surprises.
I sent out five postcards this week to people all over the world: Russia, China, Germany, Taiwan, and Oregon. I got the addresses from postcrossing which I heard about on Laila's blog. Check out these wonderful postcards: the postal adventures of Morris Mouse.
I've done some baking, too. I couldn't resist making another batch of gingerbread cookies. This time I made snow covered moose and bears. . .
. . . which inspired me to play with my food. In the video, you can hear my twenty-two year old son come into the house. He stood there watching me record and then said, "Wow, you've really gone around the bend." Um, actually that happened a l o n g time ago. : )
I spend a lot of time at my kitchen sink and love that there is a window to look out. I remember when I was first married and we were living in an apartment in OKC, in my little kitchen there wasn't even one window, let alone one in front of the sink, it was all very depressing.
ReplyDeleteI need to make another batch of the gingerbread cookies your have shared, last time I froze half the dough so I could make more in the future.
Love your knitting.
I don't know what I'd do without my kitchen sink. It looks out on the ocean-soaked sky, and I love it especially at night when the moon rises out of the dark water, always so full it seems of magical dreams. In my previous house, the kitchen window overlooked our hedge and the river meadow beyond, and some days I could even pretend that I didn't see the row of ugly concrete houses on the other side of the meadow.
ReplyDeleteI love the colour of those socks.
I am only dashing in briefly here so will have to come back to watch the video. But I like the idea of making a story from biscuits :-)
I've just been watching "Spencer's Mountain" - I've never seen it - and Henry Fonda's character is building a new house. They've put up the frame and he made a point about the space where the window over the kitchen sink would be, for the view.
ReplyDeleteI like your little bear and moose story!
I love the curtains in your kitchen sink window and what a beautiful yellow tree to look at while you do your chores....or play.
ReplyDeleteI've lived in houses with a view above the sink and without. I definitely prefer with. I love to daydream while washing the dishes and I do have some statues there of Mary and Joseph so it ends up being an altar of sorts. Lovely post :)
ReplyDeleteI want those cookies!!! and I love that he said you've gone round the bend!! love it
ReplyDeleteYou are a hoot. The "lots of new stories to share" makes me think of Mr. Rogers. My kitchen sink has a window, of course, and I have seen all manner of happenings out of it. I'll have to tell you about it some time.
