I want to tell you what happened to my mother.
In the autumn she found a lump in her breast. She had a mammogram and sonogram in late November that revealed a 9mm mass. Two weeks later, on December 14th, a biopsy was performed. A week later on the 23rd, she was given the news that she had metaplastic carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. Her surgery was scheduled for January 6th.
Every Advent, my children and I pray St. Andrew's Christmas Novena. I'm sure you can guess what our intention was this time. We all prayed that my mom's breast cancer would go away. Pretty childish, huh? Foolish and medieval.
My mother's surgery took longer than expected. Apparently something happened during the operation that held things up, and they had to wait for a pathologist to come to the surgical suite. But, the surgery went well, and my mother did fine. In fact, she has not had any pain during recovery.
Last Wednesday, she had her follow-up appointment with the surgeon and received the pathology report. The surgeon began the appointment by saying, "Something happened during your surgery that I have never seen in my entire career." When the doctor made the incision to remove my mother's tumor, fluid came gushing out of the area, but no tumor could be found. The doctor finished the rest of the surgery as planned, removing a margin of tissue around the area where the tumor should have been, as well as the sentinel lymph node. The pathology report stated that no malignancy was found in any of the analyzed tissues.
My mother's cancer disappeared. The doctor has no explanation.
The eyes of the LORD are upon those who love him; / he is their mighty shield and strong support, / A shelter from the heat, a shade from the noonday sun / a guard against stumbling, a help against falling. ~Sirach 34:16
Lisa, if you're reading this, my Christmas cactus--which started blooming before Thanksgiving--is still setting new buds and going strong!
prayers of the faithful is powerful medicine :0) so glad to hear that your mother's cancer is gone! Praising Our Lord!!! mari
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mari! "Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them." ♥
DeleteTo get the cactus out of the way - amazing! Ours at the library set buds right before Christmas, and just barely began blossoming on the holiday.
ReplyDeleteBut, your mother!! Wow! Praise God! Is your poor mother quite giddy? Have your kids ever seen such a dramatic result from prayer? Truly wonderful. St. Andrew, even though he lived such a LONG time ago, has not forgotten us, has he?
Lisa, my mother can't believe this grace has been given to her, and my children's faith has been strengthened by it at a time when they really needed it. I think in some ways the saints are more alive than we. I am so grateful for St. Andrew's intercession.
DeleteOh my goodness, what a blessing! A double blessing, because not only was your mother saved but surely her story must touch many hearts with wonder and wisdom. (Although I am always aware when saying this that there are many thousands of people who pray devoutly and don't get a miracle. I'm glad your family did get one.)
ReplyDeleteThe works of God are far above my understanding. I believe in His goodness and love, and I pray in order to be near Him at all times. I am in awe that my mother received this special grace, and I am also confident that God does not love her more than any other person. Very many of my family's prayers have not led to us receiving our request. But, they have led us closer to God's love and will. ♥
Deletewhat a wonderful miracle. thank you so much for sharing this.

ReplyDeleteLifts my heart to read this post. Apart from how wonderful this is for your mother, I think your children will remember the whole of their lives long what happened when they offered the St Andrews Novena. You will have taught them that prayer changes things, and given them a gift of lasting hope. May your mother's recovery continue well. May she be blessed with the love and healing of the Lord.
