Hurricane

Candleglow
The wind began to howl yesterday afternoon, and then the rain came. At five o'clock we lost power; by six darkness descended like a velvet curtain. We scrambled for candles and matches. It was time to make supper, so my husband went out into the storm and dragged the grill from the backyard into the garage (he can be heroic like that).  I made fettucine alfredo by lantern light--it was like camping :- ). We ate in the glow of candles and washed our dishes by hand. It felt like olden times. I tried to knit, but my eyes wouldn't focus in the dim light, so I gave up. We sang. Song after silly song, at the top of our lungs:  Senor Don Gato, Do A Deer, I've Got The Joy Down In My Heart. Then my son asked me if my laptop was charged. It was. He went to his room and retrieved, The Creature From the Black Lagoon, from his vintage horror film collection. Zach popped us a big kettle of corn out on the grill, and we watched the movie in the dark while the wind blew down our backyard fence and split two of our neighbors' big trees down the middle. The power came back on around nine this morning. The sun is shining and there is hardly a breeze.

If you were in the hurricane's path, I hope you are safe and warm, and that you were able to weather the storm in good cheer. Of course, with only a broken fence to repair, that's easy for me to say. It is difficult to imagine the devastation in places like New Jersey and New York City. My heart goes out to those who are suffering.
