Joining Ginny for this week's Yarn Along

The pattern I'm knitting requires concentration. It appears simple, but is decidedly not for beginners. Can you tell what it is? If I'm successful and it turns out, I'm going to make another one. (You'll see why when I'm finished!) The yarn is buttery soft and nice to work with. I am not crazy about all of Knitpick's products, but I do like this one (Comfy Sport).

Last night, I finished a marvelous book called Snow in Winter, by Margaret Bacon. I found it while browsing the library shelves. It was written thirty-seven years ago, and is the story of two cousins who grew up on an English farm during WWII. Essentially a tale of contrasts, one girl grows up to be a traditional wife and mother and the other a career woman who values her independence. It is a commentary on almost all aspects of modern life, but is essentially a women's book. I can't believe I've never heard of it (or Margaret Bacon). It is beautifully written, compassionately told--and very important, I think, for its insightful observations about what we've gained and what we've lost with "progress". I highly recommend it.

It has been such a rainy, cool spring that whenever the sun shines, I spend the entire day outdoors. I take my breakfast and notebook out to the garden in the morning, putter around in my veggie and flower beds, visit with the chickens, and splash around with the kids in the pool in the afternoon. Suppers consist of easy summertime fare and are taken en plein air. Blueberries have been on sale at the market, so I made a  pie on Sunday. It wasn't the prettiest pie, but it was soooooo yummy. : )

My roses are in full bloom, all five bushes (we planted one for each of my children). They are like a living rainbow: yellow, pink, white, red, and peach. The yellow is a floribunda called "Sunsprite", and the strawberry red is a hybrid tea rose called "Let Freedom Ring". Amy gave me this cast iron fairy last year for Mother's Day. Isn't it sweet? I love it.

A happy Wednesday to all of my knitting and book loving friends. : ) I'll be back Friday with more to share!

  2. oh -the food looks yummy and the pool refreshing

I think I might be jealous of the roses - I can't seem to grow them.

Looking forward to seeing what your knitting turns out to be.

  3. Beautiful!! I can't for the life of me figure out what you are knitting. I thought at first maybe it was a baby wrap (you know those things they use in photo ops) but with something that looks like a heel flap... just doesn't seem right! haha!

I love the idea of planting something for each child. Great idea!

  6. Hmm... Not sure what you are knitting, it looks a bit like a heel on a sock to me... The books sounds very interesting, it's something I would enjoy reading as well. By the way, the food looks delicious and your garden is beautiful!

  8. Beautiful roses. I love looking at them but I hate to tend to them so I enjoy them in my mother's garden. Yummy looking food also. Thanks for the book mention. I is on my wish list.

  9. Another pretty post, full of so many good things. Mmm...trying to work out what you are making. At a very quick glance I though it was some kind of sock/boot that fastens down the front but then I noticed the shaping at the top. I'm intrigued and have no idea. I can't wait to find out.
How lovely to have a rose bush for each of your children. The food all looks delicious, especially those potatoes and the pie. I love blueberries and just had some with my breakfast cereal. Thanks for the book recommendation.
Hope the sun is shining and you have lots more pottering, pool days.

  10. My first thought when looking at your current knitting was some kind of market bag or backpack... whatever it is, I can't wait to see the finished piece. And heavens, do you want to come cook dinner at my house? Your pictures look like something out of a magazine piece. I think I'd call it: The Perfect Summer Supper. :-)

  11. Susan, please tell me how you cooked your potatoes - they look perfectly delicious! Your knitting project - looks like a hot-water-bottle cover at this stage. But it probably isn't because you say you'll make another. And why would you want two? :D
