Today it is stormy and snowing again--it is very cold (20°F/-7°) and we're expecting up to a foot of new snow --, but yesterday was one of those perfect, bright winter days, so after Mass the kids and I took the opportunity to visit the book shop in Winchester center for a browse. It is one of those lovely, old shops that has been around for decades and offers an impressive assortment of books, stationery and trinkets. I had a gift certificate in my pocket from my birthday and happily came home with a handful of postcards (I am obsessed with postcrossing), a couple of cat bookmarks, and a new novel--it's the one Karen has been reading: Blue Asylum. Amy also bought a couple of books: These Shallow Graves and Moonlight Over Paris.
After shopping, we took a stroll down Main Street and enjoyed the gorgeous view from the bridge overlooking the Mill Pond as it flows into the Aberjona River, the same river that flows near our house.
Right now I am reading the Russian novel Laurus by Evgenij Vodolazkin. I really like it so far. It contains the sense of a fairy tale or saint story--the very sense that is missing from our experience of modern life. It is a different book, one that is hard to describe. However, I think this short review does an admirable job.
The other day I was thinking about how much I dislike talking (which is weird, I know). It makes friendship difficult because people expect a steady stream of chatter from each other. I don't like saying a bunch of useless crap that I later regret. I prefer to be quiet with nature and with my own thoughts. Why is that so wrong?
What a very pretty area! You really are getting clobbered today, aren't you? It's been snowing here since mid-morning, but we've only gotten a few inches.
ReplyDeleteWorking in a library is like going to the bookstore - I have my pick of new books, or older ones. Or, really older ones, dropped off by the patrons! Enjoy your purchases!
I'm loving the snow--but only because we've had hardly any at all up 'til now. It really is very pretty. I always find myself reading Russian novels when it snows in winter. I think you are very lucky to work in a library. That is one of my dream jobs!
Deletethere's not much that's more special than being able to go into a real proper bookstore and buy some books.
ReplyDeleteI dislike talking too, except with the bestest of company.
I feel so lucky to live near this book shop.
DeleteI enjoy quiet activities with people that don't require much talking: drawing pictures together, bird watching, walking through woods, worshiping. I like to listen.
What a lovely place to spend some time Susan. I love seeing the snow scattered about, if that was here everything would be closed down ;)
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing wrong with being with your own thoughts and being quiet. While I am a talker by nature [beware if you're standing next to me in a line] there are times when I crave quiet.
peace and love to you. Enjoy the snow!
We haven't had much snow at all this winter, so I am really enjoying it. Soon it will all melt away and spring will arrive.
DeleteI know I would enjoy listening to you, Tracey.♥
Browsing a book store and a nice walk are such a lovely way to spend time. I wish I wouldn't analyze everything I say after I said it. Sometimes being quiet solves that issue for me.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a nice week.
Yes, sometimes being quiet is a relief from myself--from turning over conversations in my mind later. I enjoy being with people, but I don't always have a lot to say.
DeleteThank you for the kind comment.♥
oh, I cannot wait to see what you think of the book! I would love to go to a bookstore that had lots of books and other stuff :) Sadly around here there are few around. We have snow here and it's beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so cold there!
ReplyDeleteI have days when I talk a lot and days when i have very little to say for myself ... we all need silence sometimes.
That first picture looks so much like Newburyport, MA I thought that's where it was!
